ヨセミテ国立公園が素晴らしかった件。超寒かったけど。Stunning 3 days in freezing Yosemite

Yosemite National Park was the first big thing of my 2 months-world tour. I spent 3 days there(Apr 2-4th), and had great time. Here I’d like to introduce highlights of this tour and some tips for those who are interested in visiting Yosemite.

# Highlights

Yosemite National Park is huge, and you can see around either with walk, car or even with bike. There are also some people who do rock climbing. If you decide to see around with walk, so as I did this time, there are lots of trails you can follow. It depends on which trail you take, but usually the trails are well organized. Some roads are paved, and others are very easy to walk even it’s not paved. This time we took the trails written below. There are some hills(?) you can climb up such as the place called Half Dome and I’ve heard you can have really nice view from the top but this time we took the loop trail where you basically walk along the river and can see 2 falls and beautiful lake on your way. It was very flat, not much up-down.

# Wildlife

While walking, you might encounter with some wildlife. This time we saw lots of squirrels, deers and a fox. According to the sign, there are also bears and mountain lions. Bears seem to come to the human area sometimes to get food. Outside of the tent there was a “bear box” where you supposed to put all of the food and beverages to avoid bear attack. Apparently about 100 cars are heavily attacked by bears, which usually occur due to the carelessness of the drivers though(i.e. leave foods inside the car). We should not forget the place is originally their place, not ours.

# How to get there

Yosemite national park is about 300km away from San Francisco city. You can get there either by car or Amtrak. By car, it seems to take about 4hrs. If you are visitor and if it is difficult to rent a car like me, Amtrak will be the option. Amtrak is the National Railroad Passenger Corporation in the US. It takes about six hours, and includes 2 bus rides and 1 train. The price might varies depends on seasons but it cost me 76$ for back and force, which is not bad. Both bus and trains are comfortable and you can use wifi in the train. Once you’re in Yosemite, there is a great free bus service that will take you anywhere within the park.

You can book from here.

# How many days you should spend?

I spent 2nights in Yosemite this time, but the first day I arrived at 2pm ish and the last day I left at 10am. So the actual time I spent in Yosemite was not that long. I was satisfied but if I had more time, I would have spent another 1 or 2 nights(wanted to climb up the hills). If you are really in to outdoor stuffs, you can spend more than a week. I met a guy who brought his tent and was planning to stay 8days. A lot of people I met this time stayed around 3days though.

# Things you should keep in mind

Accommodation: there are several options for place to stay in the park. I chose the place called “Curry Village” where they offer accommodation for reasonable price. They had lodge, heated-tent and tent as options and only (not heated) tent was available so I stayed there. It was cheap(20/night) but crazily cold since it got as low as -5℃ in the midnight. If you are planning to visit there in the winter season, I’d recommend you to look into hotels early(more than a month before) and get at least the heated tent. If you bring a tent with you, you can stay at camping site too. I saw a lot of families coming with camping car too. The price of the accommodation get higher in the summer.

Food: There are grocery stores and restaurants for each village inside the park. I really appreciated that the price of meals or groceries were same as it is in the city and not extremely expensive. So you don’t have to worry about the food.

3days in Yosemite became unforgettable memory for me. I’d strongly recommend you to visit if you are planning to visit the west coast of the US. IMG_5167_copy
